2016 Term 4, Year 4 English Language Learners

Topic Study: Natural Disaster Technology

Curriculum Area: Technology Level 2 To identify a need after a natural disaster, plan and make your idea before testing and evaluate how it went.

Learning Activities are related to: Find out about natural disasters that are likely to occur in NZ and identify needs within. Develop a brief and design a prototype that addresses the need, meets the brief and takes into account available resources. Make a model of prototype to explore, test and evaluate its suitability to meet the need. Understand suitability of materials for different purposes.

2016 Term 4, Year 3 English Language Learners

Topic Study: Natural Disaster

Curriculum Area: Science - Planet Earth and Beyond Describe how natural features are changed and resources affected by natural events and human actions. Explore and describe natural features and resources

Learning Activities are related to: Human actions affect planet earth and its environment How do we treat our environment? What natural events have occurred?

The Year 3's have been testing the strength of shapes needed to make a bridge. They are asking the question, "What is the strongest and most rigid shape to make a bridge out of?







In Term 4  the Year 5 and 6 learners are researching and finding out about 'The Water Cycle'



The Year 4's have been investigating and learning about Ancient Egypt.  Check out their Google Slides!



This Term our Year 3 Ell learners have been investigating and learning about Space.  Read what they found out about their key question after viewing science videos of Astronauts in Space.







Our  Year 5 and 6 learners have been learning about water and in particular the Science of a Tsunami.  They have watched a 'Ted-Talk', identified unknown new  key vocabulary and are able to explain what the words mean as well as describe the sequence to a Tsunami.  






Our Year 4 learners  have been on a Virtual Field Trip investigating the Takahe, an endangered New Zealand bird.  They have listened to an audioconference and made notes to answer questions.  They have investigated the Burwood Breeding Programme in the South Island and the remote Murchison Mountains.








Our fabulous Year 3 learners have been working on their sentence structure and extending their sentences by adding describing words and using conjunctions to add interest to their writing.







In Term 3 our Year 2 learners have been learning about Celebrations from around the World.  What do they celebrate at home?  What happens?  How do different people celebrate something special to them?  What is the same?  What is different?  Are special clothes worn, special food eaten?

Year 2

In Term 2 our Year 2 English Language Learners, (that are withdrawn from the classroom for support) are learning about ‘Light’.  Below are some key words they will meet and are learning to understand.  It would be helpful to your child if you talked to them in their first language about these words.

The children are learning about:

·               Different sources of light

·               How we use light

·               Explore and question how light is important in their daily living

·             That all living things have certain requirements so they can stay alive

Year 3

In Term 2 our Year 3 English Language Learners, (that are withdrawn from the classroom for support) are learning about ‘”What’s that building?’  Below are some key words they will meet and are learning to understand.  It would be helpful to your children for you to talk to them in their first language about these words.

·               What materials are used to build a structure

·               How materials can be used for a specific purpose

·               What materials suit an environment

Year 4

In Term 2 our Year 4 English Language Learners, (that are withdrawn from the classroom for support) are learning about ‘Lighthouses’.  Below are some key words they will need to learn about and understand.  It would be helpful to your child if you could talk to them in their first language about these words.

Year 5 and 6

In Term 2 our Year 5 and 6 English Language Learners (that are withdrawn from the classroom for Esol support), have chosen to learn about Bats and their habitat.  Below are some key words they will need to learn about.  It would be helpful to your child if you could talk to them in their first language about these words.

The children will learn:

·               What is a habitat?

·               To explain how Bats are suited to their particular habitat and how they respond to changes in their environment, both natural and human induced
